Percona announces enterprise support for Valkey users
Percona has announced its enterprise-grade support capabilities for Valkey, an open source fork of the Redis in-memory key-value datastore.
Valkey was initiated by the Linux Foundation, responding to Redis's shift from open source to a more restrictive licensing model. In response, Percona has made available Percona Support for Valkey, a service designed to aid in maintaining reliable and optimised Valkey deployments across various environments, such as on-premises, hybrid, or cloud.
The company's support includes real-time expertise, industry-best service level agreements, freedom from vendor lock-in, and tailored solutions. The services are provided in two core tiers: Advanced, for production environments, and Premium, for mission-critical environments. They are intended to mitigate potential issues such as inefficient configurations, high-latency operations, complex migrations, and suboptimal settings.
"When the Linux Foundation first announced its plans for Valkey last March, Percona immediately threw its support behind the project," said Ann Schlemmer, Chief Executive Officer of Percona. "Beyond the simple fact that many of our customers also relied on Redis for their data operations, we at Percona were motivated by our fundamental belief in the principles of open source—that an open world is a better world—and we remain committed to doing everything we can to help foster and promote such a world."
Valkey arose as a response to Redis's licensing shift to the Redis Source Available License (RSALv2) and the Server Side Public License (SSPLv1), opting instead to continue using the original open source BSD licence. Following its announcement, Valkey gained support from major industry players like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Ericsson, and Percona, highlighting a wider confidence in open source solutions.
Percona has also dedicated resources to enhance Valkey's features, focusing on programmability and security, alongside resolving core vulnerabilities. These efforts have contributed to Valkey experiencing notable enhancements in performance and efficiency since its initial release.
A Percona survey indicated a strong inclination among Redis users towards adopting Valkey, with 75% of respondents expressing interest or already using the new system. The survey revealed that 76% of organisations plan to use third-party enterprise support for Valkey deployments.
In addition to its support services, Percona offers Valkey Migration services, aimed at ensuring smooth transitions from Redis OS to Valkey. The company has introduced the Redis OSS Health Assessment, a comprehensive review process for existing Redis setups to optimise and prepare for migration.
Peter Zaitsev, Co-Founder of Percona, commented on the development, stating, "The almost immediate explosion of interest and support for Valkey goes beyond just the technology itself. It wasn't simply a matter of companies looking to control costs. It was an expression of widespread dissatisfaction and frustration that people are feeling with self-proclaimed 'open source' software vendors suddenly deciding to abandon the model."
Zaitsev continued, "It was a palpable response, and one we felt here at Percona. That's why Valkey is the first addition to our list of supported technologies in nearly half a decade. And we will continue to support Valkey, as well as other open source initiatives like it, for as long as they're here."
