Vertiv unveils new energy-efficient rack for AI & HPC

Yesterday

Vertiv has announced the global launch of the Vertiv PowerDirect Rack, a new IT rack DC power shelf solution equipped to support artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

The Vertiv PowerDirect Rack has been developed to deliver scalable 50V DC power for IT racks, with the capacity to support both alternating current (AC) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) input. This adaptability is intended to enhance operational flexibility for data centre systems facing increasing demands for efficiency and capacity.

The system is designed to be incorporated within the framework of the Open Compute Project (OCP) ORv3 High Power Rack environments, aiming to optimise power delivery while minimising energy waste. Notably, the modularity of this system allows for an expansion up to 132kW per rack through the integration of multiple power shelves, which aims to ensure scalable growth possibilities without the burden of expanding physical space.

Kyle Keeper, Senior Vice President of the Power Business Unit at Vertiv, commented on the new release, stating, "Today's data centres face increasing pressure to deliver more power in less space while supporting the rapid growth of AI and HPC applications. Vertiv PowerDirect Rack addresses these challenges with a scalable, energy-efficient DC power design that equips operators with the flexibility to adapt to evolving workload demands and build future-ready infrastructure."

Among its key features, the Vertiv PowerDirect Rack boasts a peak energy efficiency of 97.5%, which aims to significantly reduce power waste, cooling demand, and subsequently, operational costs. This efficiency is facilitated by the elimination of separate rectification and power distribution necessary with traditional AC uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

The system supports both AC and HVDC inputs, allowing for seamless integration into existing power infrastructures, catering towards a future-ready setup that anticipates evolving data centre needs. The infrastructure is modular and hot-swappable, which permits efficient scalability and maintenance without the need for disruption in service.

Vertiv highlights the importance of the Vertiv PowerDirect Rack as a part of its extensive portfolio aimed at supporting AI and HPC acceleration. The inclusion of advanced power management features assures enhanced reliability and safeguards to maintain continuous operations, preventing potential disruptions.
